Channel 4 led the way - four of its projects have made the shortlists for the 1999 International Emmys, presented at the New York Hiton on 22 November. Twenty-one programmes from eight countries were nominated for the seven international Emmys, which honour programmes made outside the US. The prestigious Directorate Award, which was bestowed by Walter Cronkite, went to entertainment veteran Ralph Baruch, a founder of media conglom Viacom and an active leader in cultural affairs and diverse media organizations.
